Hey folks,
I'm happy to clarify our intentions. We're definitely not trying to limit people's fun, but there are good reasons not to allow multiple accounts: - The biggest abusers of multiple accounts are scammers or people soliciting other users on the site to visit other websites, buy things, earn money at home, etc. etc. So preventing users from having multiple accounts helps to reduce that problem. For the safety of everyone, we are doing everything we can to combat the scammer problem (which plagues every dating site, by the way) - Using multiple accounts allows you to get around many of the limits we set in place on the site, like messages sent to new users per day, etc., making these limits meaningless. - We are trying to do as much as possible to ensure that every account has a real user behind it, and that all accounts are active, i.e. not dead accounts. Allowing multiple accounts works against that goal as it encourages people to make temporary accounts, etc. which we then have to clean out later. - Multiple accounts allows users to get around bans, privilege limitations, etc. Basically, it would make forum bans meaningless, as an example. And so on. I know there are some folks that would like to be able to use multiple accounts, and for what could be argued as legitimate reasons. But the disadvantages in our minds far outweigh the advantages for the few. And many of those legitimate reasons can be handled in other ways - escapedlunatic, you could turn off your IM, for instance, and turn it back on when you feel like chatting. You can also browse the forums while you're not logged in if you just want to read the latest posts. Hope that helps clarify things. |
