I just hope movement is westward. That way when Bush leaves office he will be that much further from me!! Even if its only a fraction of an inch, Ill feel better. Come-on, You didnt think this thread could escape the effects of Bushes Presidency... What?! Didn't you know that Bush caused the earthquake today? It's all his fault. I suspected as much!! |

Thi guy was travelling down the Miss on a flat-bottom boat!
They had tied to shore near N Madrid! Exposed to a most unpleasant alternative, we were compelled to remain - here we were for the night, or subject ourselves to imminent hazard in navigating through the innumerable obstructions in the river; considering the danger of running two-fold, we concluded to remain. At the dawn of day I went on shore to examine the effects of the shocks; the earth about 20 feet from the waters edge was deeply cracked, but no visible injury of moment had been sustained; fearing, however, to remain longer where we were, it was thought much advisable to leave our landing as expeditiously as possible; this was immediately done - at a few rods distance from the shore, we experienced a fifth shock, more severe than either of the preceding. I had expected this from the louring appearance of the weather, it was indeed most providential that we had started, for such was the strength of this last shock, that the bank to which we were (but a few moments since) attached, was rent and fell into the river, whilst the trees rushed from the forests, precipitating themselves into the water with a force sufficient to have dashed us into a thousand atoms. |

I think so. Its amazing what Ive been reading!
Above and below New Madrid the earth was raised so as to form waterfalls along the Mississippi. New Madrid was destroyed and lowered like 10-13 ft. |

The quakes 3 major, 8's, and the aftershocks lasted from 12-16 til 1-23!

I didnt realize there were so many eyewitness accounts!
Amazing, and scary to think of it happening today! |

The scientists are seriously telling St. Louisians that the 100 year big one is coming and it will be the New Madrid fault.
Our bridges are being reinforced. We are to keep emergency supplies. But...I have been hearing this for ten years now. |

I was reading Newspaper articles at the time from the St Louis newspapers. St Louis felt them but the worst was around New Madrid and south of New Madrid!

If I lived anywhere from island #9 to 30 miles south of New Madrid, I would definitely leave!

But...my parents are unable to obtain this insurance for their brick home. That's how serious the insurance companies are about it too. I heard tonite that people were trying to get earthquake insurance today but were turned down because we are still in the aftershock phase. |
