The Forgotten
Memories are all that some of us have. Maybe it is the tired man, in the yellow suit upon the red engine. Maybe it is the big-bellied man with a badge, and a constant reassuring smile. Maybe it is the frail old woman, who prepared the house twenty-five years ago for her soldier's return tomorrow-tomorrow never came.Maybe it is the old man that served in Vietnam, and raises a flag every morning at 5:00am without fail and weeps for fallen comrades.Maybe it is the faithful yellow dog in the back yard, that does not quite understand why his master has not returned. Maybe it is the young widow insisting that her children pray before bed-time. Maybe, as her children grow older without a father, they will come to understand why. Maybe this great nation will one day understand patriotism, and why we must remember the forgotten. David Russell Grote |
