Since moving to Kansas, I am afraid of wind!

But now that you have explained it to me, I think I can cope with it a little better!

I have big ears, so I understand having fear of the wind. If the wind is just hard enough, I can fall forward in slow mo!

I think maybe everyone is afraid of everyone else. Which is sad because I can drive thru a small town that I have never been to before and people wave like I am their best friend but they can't post on here. Interesting. Does anyone have an idea why it is that way?

It' seems to me that the Kansas thread is sparingly posted upon because Kansas, as a whole, is only sparingly populated.

Of course I can drive to the other side of the state (in this case I'll go with Elkheart or Liberal), stop in the city square, walk around and everyone will say "hello" or "good afternoon." This is Kansas, we assume everyone is our neighbor because no one comes here that isn't from here. Let's face it people our state isn't known for it's scenic mountain views or it's world class beaches. So, and this is especially true of towns under 5000 people, we just naturally assume that most people we meet are "local." And really, there are only 2.2 million people in Kansas, don't we all know each other, or at least a relative of whoever it is you run into?

Okay, so that answers why everyone is so nice and polite on the street. But it doesn't tackle the original question, which is "why aren't they posting here?" Well, this isn't Kansas. From what I can tell from the time stamp, this group of Forums is in California. You ever walked around in L.A.? That town sucks for friendliness. These people aren't our neighbors. It's like being on vacation in Texas and seeing someone in a Jayhawks or Wildcats sweatshirt. You haven't been talking to too many people, but you see one of those and know he used to live in (Lawrence or Manhattan as the example allows). Usually they have, and you get to talk to a Kansan, even if he or she was there for just a short time. Amazingly enough, anyone that has lived here, always enjoys getting a little Kansas on them too.

So the Kansas thread is like accidently running into another Kansan in a far away place. You might check that spot again if you go back, just in case you run into another "neighbor" while out and about.

Well that and there are only 2 million Kansans, half of those are married to each other, a quarter of those are under 18, so that only leaves 3/4 million single people in Kansas, maybe 1% of which are on here. From what I can tell only about 5% of the people on here talk on the threads. SO, by simple (and quick) math that tells us there are only about 350 Kansas people that are even willing to post. I'm betting most haven't found this thread yet. I was on for about 9 months before a fellow Kansan sent me a link.

I hope that sounded like a rational and logical answer to your question.

I am from LA. I so agree with you on the not-quite-so-friendly factor. Californians are known to be a very, um, (trying to find a way to not make me look bad, as I am one too) not-so-nice.

I get into trouble out here sometimes cause I still harbor some Californian LACK OF PATIENCE.

And I tend to apologize first for anything I may say out loud, because we are very blunt out there. Not many Californians have tact.

(I do have some, but sometimes I say stuff that gets me into trouble without realizing, and I am sorry for that too.)

Anyway, I wish the Kansans would post more. I am an out of towner (I think y'all will always consider me that) and I would like to know more of the people from here.

And I can promise, should I ever move back to LA, you can always look me up and I will show you LA the right way, with an open arm of kindness.

ive noticed tho, that in the bigger cities,wichita,topeka, etc. people are mostly indifferent as they walk in a mall or on the street and unless i say howdy 1st they will walk right on by. But i can walk into any and i mean ANY small town restaurant and strike up a conversation with anyone setting in there whether i know them or not. And they darn sure know im not a local, cause everybody in the area knows everybody, they are true communities.

I have been in kansas for over twenty years.. people here are friendlier than those I knew in boston.
I think that they are more sensitive to aggressiveness here and are quicker to go on guard

They are. Many Kansans still have a hard time with my Californian bluntness. I have been working on being calmer though!

yes that is me too. I can not remember how many times I have had people wanting to kill me for the way I presented myself when I was younger.. but it was perfectly normal way to be in boston haha

I honestly hadn't thought to post in here before, I'm just following a friends posts and found the topic interesting.

On small town friendliness: if it's a small enough town, people will say hi because it's a relief to realize that you're not the only one left there. The reflex to wave is due to the scarcity of people to wave to. As you get closer to larger towns, the reflex dies down because you end up waving constantly. Your arm gets tired after a while!

A wave is nice but a smile goes further.

Nicole didn't care what size the town/city, she waved at everybody every time she crossed the street and they always smiled and waved back, no matter what kind of car they drove. Something about a little princess bedecked in a crown and gown waving at you while holding her mommy's hand and walking across the street with a big cheesy grin makes people smile and wave. Kinda makes your day a little brighter, don't ya think?

It definetly would. I don't know where Nicole is or what may have happened to her but I am sorry that you are sad and have to miss her.

Nicole is my precious daughter. I had to make a tough choice and send her to live with her father in Israel so I can finish school and work full time at both my jobs to give her a better, brighter future. But don't worry, she will be back brightening up many a Wichitan's life soon enough!

You did something for Nicole and she will be proud of you for making a better life for her. I understand that the loss is painful but as you say it is not permenanete which is a blessing.
