Guns do not equal peace or a more peaceful society. Gun violence on sharp rise in Seattle By CASEY MCNERTHNEY SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF photo Brad Vest / P-I Police at the scene of a November 2008 shooting in the 8600 block of Rainier Avenue South that officers said was gang related. (Editor's Note: This story has been clarified to note statistics are based on preliminary police data provided by the department.) Related content ·: Map and police database of Seattle assault calls involving guns The young man was said to be in King County Juvenile Court because he was waiting for a friend. He'd looked over the 144 matters on the Aug. 14 court calendar and had heard that his friend might be released from juvenile detention. But alleged members of a rival gang noticed him, authorities said, and the hostility escalated to the point where security had to escort out the 21-year-old. He was walking through the parking lot, approaching 12th Avenue, when a four-door sedan, possibly a 2004 Chevy Impala, stopped in front of the parking lot entrance to the Youth Service Center. A young man got out of the back passenger side and made a derogatory remark before firing five or six shots, wounding the 21-year-old, who police have investigated in connection with a still-unsolved gang-related homicide from 2008. The latest gang-related shooting outside the Youth Service Center -- a case that has brought no arrests -- was one of the most brazen assaults this year, and added to a troubling trend of increasing gun violence in Seattle. Between Jan. 1 and June 15, 2008, there were 219 assault calls said to involve guns, according to preliminary police records. During the same period this year, police data show the number has jumped to 346, a 58 percent increase. Follow this link to see a map of those assault calls said to involve guns, obtained through a public disclosure request by seattlepi.com. Homicides have decreased in 2009. So far there have been 15 in Seattle, including 10 shooting deaths. That's down from 21 during the same period last year. But total violent crime reported to Seattle police increased 22 percent during the first seven months of this year, compared to the same period last year. Aggravated assaults, which involve a weapon or resulted in serious injury, are up 22 percent. City Councilman Tim Burgess, who detailed the crime stats on his blog, told seattlepi.com that the increase in gun-involved assaults is not limited to gang-related violence. Domestic violence incidents involving guns also show an increase. Of the 346 assault calls examined through June 15 this year, 271 of them were domestic violence cases, according to preliminary police records. On the issue of gang violence, Judge Phillip Hubbard, chief judge of the juvenile division, was among a panel of people last week who addressed the King County Council's Law, Justice and Human Services Committee on the issue of better security. He said rival gang members meet in the Youth Service Center lobby. The facility "is in one gang's territory and anyone who enters the facility has to enter rival territory to come to court or to leave," he told the committee. Less than a week after the non-fatal shooting that locked down the facility -- and also brought a police response for alleged gang members at Harborview Medical Center -- there was another lockdown at the Youth Service Center. But police were unable to find the teen said to have a gun. Hubbard explained efforts were made to increase security even prior to the incidents, but told the committee some judges have expressed concerns about coming to work. "It's completely unacceptable to Superior Court for us to be forcing people with threat of legal process to come to a court when we can't guarantee the safety of those people," Judge Bruce Hilyer told the committee last week. "And that's the situation we're dealing with right now." King County, which now has two senior deputy prosecutors working full time on gang-related cases, has also seen more 16- and 17-year-olds tried as adults after committing serious violent offenses -- something required by the state legislature. In 2008 there were 19 teens tried as adults for such crimes. Already this year there have been 36 -- nearly all gun-related crimes. While current law seems to mandate a 10-day detention for juveniles convicted of illegal gun possession, they have ways to avoid detention, including deferred disposition. King County prosecutor Dan Satterberg has drafted reforms for the legislature to close the loopholes that allow juveniles to escape detention for gun crimes. He also wants legislative reforms to have juvenile gun possession crimes taken more seriously. That includes eliminating the ability to set aside firearms sentence enhancements on juvenile crimes and eliminating deferred disposition sentencing in some cases. "Sending a clear message to youth that juvenile gun crimes are serious may help prevent them from graduating to the adult system," he wrote, "where the penalties for gun crimes are very serious and include very long sentences." http://www.seattlepi.com/local/410222_violence16.html Maybe you should do a little more research, and find out how many gang members legally purchase and carry firearms before this article is made part of the argument. |

The cost of extending the tax cuts for everyone for the next 10 years would approach $4 trillion, according to congressional estimates. Eliminating the breaks for the top earners would reduce that bill by about $700 billion.
I find that statement from the original post interesting. This is the amount of money taken from citizens over the course of ten years, but only the small fraction that was/is the tax cuts. It is ridiculous that the government needs that much money to operate. Cut government programs, leave these tax cuts in place, and cut taxes some more. Instead of spending trillions trying to micro-manage and control every aspect of everything in this country, the government needs to go back to the basics for which it was designed. |

I'm not interested in what Democrats or Republicans are proposing, I don't have a group mentality like that. I am however interested in the fact that the government gets way too much of my hard earned pay check. I don't care how much money others make, I worry about trying to make ends meet at my home. I don't need anything from the government, except to get out of my wallet, and to stop spending money they don't have, and did not earn.

In this instance, no action is the same as an increase, because the cuts expire regardless. Even if they do decide to renew the cuts for some, it still does nothing to address the REAL problem, OUT OF CONTROL GOVERNMENT SPENDING.

... Higher tax rates for all You may have been led to believe that only individuals in the top two brackets will face higher federal income taxes when the Bush cuts go bye-bye. Not true! Unless Congress takes action and President Obama goes along, rates will go up for everyone -- not just a sliver of the wealthiest Americans. The current six rate brackets of 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33% and 35% will be replaced by five new brackets with the higher rates of 15%, 28%, 31%, 36% and 39.6%. Just a few months ago, it seemed like a safe bet that Congress would make a fix to keep the existing 10%, 15%, 25% and 28% rate brackets to help out lower and middle-income folks. That bet is now looking iffy. ... The bottom line The Bush tax cuts don’t just offer tax relief to the wealthiest Americans. They offer it to just about anyone who pays federal income taxes. Their scheduled demise next year will raise the tax bill of nearly every taxpayer, unless Congress makes changes and the president jumps on board. Cantor is a supporter of free trade, voting to promote trade with Peru, Chile, Singapore, and Australia. He also voted for the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). He voted against raising the minimum wage to US$ 7.25 in 2007. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the largest federation of trade unions in the United States, rates Cantor 0%, indicating an anti-Union voting record. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Cantor#Campaign_office_incident well, his opinions are as valid as anyones,, I will wait for actual POLICY to be determined though,,, Why wait for that? If someone has been dumping garbage on your lawn, and a truckload of garbage pulls up out front, will you wait for them to throw it in your yard, or would it be better to make your presence known so hopefully they move along? Sometimes the wait and see approach isn't the best. Making your voice heard may be better. |

First, those countries were mentioned in the context of the article for the reasoning of the US in not previously joining the council because of a poor human rights record.
Second, the laws of this country provide for legal ways of becoming a citizen. To immigrate or stay here without following those laws is illegal, hence the term illegal immigrant. I fail to see how it is a violation of anyone's civil rights by protecting our borders and economy by requiring them to adhere to our immigration laws. I also fail to see how the UN has any jurisdiction over our laws. It is an encroachment on the sovereignty of our country. Third, in reading the full text of the un declaration, I find it interesting that most of it is not adhered to by many of the member nations, but we are asking them for advice? Lastly, if you like the idea of the UN imposing or offering opinion on the laws of this country, that is a much bigger problem than could ever be addressed here. |

It's interesting that this and other related videos show movie footage in the news reports. Are we being pre-programmed through movies and tv so we are not surprised when it happens for real?

The issue isn't worrying about human rights. Why would anyone think it is ok for the UN to have any say over our laws? Where is that in the Constitution or Bill of Rights? Or are we no longer a country? who said their opinion would be having a say,, who said people cant seek outside opinions? obama is a coward... when did ANY other president ask the UN's permission for internal matters? again, I dont see it as asking PERMISSION to inquire review by an outside source perhaps we should get second and third opinions more often I don't see the reasoning. Why would we need or want an outside opinion concerning our laws? We have a sovereign government with checks and balances, excluding executive orders of course, but that is another topic. There is no reason for US to ever seek the opinion of the UN, unless.... |

worrying about human rights?? THAT DAMN OBAMA,,,!!!!!! the UN dosn't need to get involved with our politics, we have doing fine without intervention.... depends upon whom you ask,, the feds could give the same argument about the intrusion of the state(although illegal immigration numbers are actually DOWN) at least the UN is being asked instead of just taking it upon themself Why would we need or want the opinion of the UN concerning the laws of our country? |

I wonder how many people will run to justify this one? |

Also, whose human rights are being violated? There is a way to immigrate to this country legally.

(CNSNews.com) – Sheriff Larry Dever, whose officers patrol Cochise County along the border between Arizona and Mexico, said he finds it “amazing” that the U.S. State Department would refer the recently passed immigration law in his state to the United Nations Human Rights Council for review. “Well, it’s just amazing to me,” Dever told CNSNews.com. “Course, I have about as much regard for the U.N. as I do the vermin that hides in the rocks around my house here and reaches out and tries to bite me every now and then.” The Bush administration refused to join the U.N. Human Rights Council, citing lax membership criteria that allowed countries with poor human rights records to sit on the council, including countries such as China, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Russia, Cuba, Pakistan, Tunisia and Egypt. The Obama administration joined the council, citing its imperfections but made claims that U.S. efforts could change the organization for the better. Now, the U.S. State Department is asking the council to review possible human rights violations that supposedly could occur under the Arizona’s new law against illegal immigration. The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) has also filed a lawsuit challenging the Arizona law. “Where does this end?” Dever told CNSNews.com. “Why the Department of Justice intervened in this case to begin with was beyond comprehension,” Dever said, referring to the DOJ lawsuit, which claims that the Arizona law violated the federal government’s exclusive right to enforce federal immigration laws. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton addresses the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, in New York. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)Dever said the State Department move, however, is in keeping with the Obama administration’s reluctance to enforce federal immigration law and that it is probably seeking support from the United Nations to further its agenda. “It’s indicative of the personality of the entire administration and what they are trying to get done,” Dever said. “This is just further evidence.” Dever added that the results of the U.N. review would not have any impact for those with boots on the ground in Arizona who, on a daily basis, fight the flow of illegal immigrants across the porous U.S. border. “They can take their declarations and their findings and pack them all up and keep them in the United Nations because we really don’t care what they think,” Dever said. In its report to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, the State Department, headed by Secretary Hillary Clinton, said the following: “A recent Arizona law, S.B. 1070, has generated significant attention and debate at home and around the world. The issue is being addressed in a court action that argues that the federal government has the authority to set and enforce immigration law. This action is ongoing; parts of the law are currently enjoined.” |

African Diaspora The geneology (the family tree)of many people in the USA include branches that extend into Africa. Tracing our family heritage and claiming all the branches of that tree as our own is not only a way to connect with the past, it is also a way to connect with the current global community. My great grandparents immigrated here from Germany, but I do not consider myself a German - American. I am a United States citizen, and I reside in the United States, therefore I am an American. I personally see no sense in the hyphen American thing. You are an American or not, plain and simple. As far as the global community... no thanks, I'll pass, I would rather be an American. |
