Christmas dinner

![]() In my country of origin, traditionally there should be 12 meatless dishes on Christmas Eve, just like there are 12 months in a year. We begin with a prayer and sharing the Christmas wafer. Then for a starter there are two or three kinds of herring, also fish in aspic. Then mushroom soup or red borscht with dumplings. Then fried fish with potatoes, cabbage rolls with buckwheat and mushrooms, Greek fish. Christmas Eve sauerkraut, fried dumplings stuffed with cabbage and mushrooms. For dessert there are several types of cakes (cheesecake, apple pie, poppy seed cake) and cookies (e.g. gingerbread). Traditionally, you have to try everything, but it can be really small portions. We sing Christmas carols and then open presents. We also go to mass at church which starts at midnight. This year my child and I visiting my brother and his family in England. There will definitely be herring in oil, red borscht with dumplings, fried fish, pierogi and cakes. |
