I've gone back and forth between both and both have their pros and cons. It boils down to you, what you need it for, what you feel most comfortable with. Right now, HP is my choice of choices. They last a good while and, running AMD, move at a good speed if you're not going for a gaming computer, which you said you weren't. You want it for basic use so just play with a Mac a bit in the stores and see how it feels to you, if it's something you're willing to take a chance on. If not, pc it is!
