Oh! Randerio, I once got to hang out w/ Taj Mahal ... about 1978 or '79 ... He was SO tall ... had to bend my neck straight up to talk to him ...

Didya know that Lead Belly, the 'King of the 12-string guitar' , had a very volatile temper that was known to land him into trouble with the law? It is a wonder he had a music recording career at all. Bob Dylan once noted that Lead Belly was ... "One of the few ex-cons who recorded a popular children’s album". His various convictions sent him to prison 3 times! His first time was done for the carrying of a pistol. Next, he landed in the pokey for killing one of his relatives, Will Stafford, in a fight over a woman. He only did 7 yr., on a 7 to 35 term. The third time he was convicted for attempted homicide, as he had knifed a man in a fight. There, in Angola prison, he was 'discovered' by musicologists John Lomax and his 18-year-old son Alan Lomax, during a visit to the prison farm. They recorded hundreds of his songs on portable aluminum disc recording equipment for the Library of Congress. He was soon after released early for good behaviour, having served 4 years. The rest is our good fortune of musical history ... ( He was also Nirvana's favourite musician ...) didnt he also sing a song to the governor at the time to pardon him and that governor did on hid last day in office? if you ever get a chance there is a great movie about him,from what i remember that guy from magnum pi,ithink his name is mosely..played him..also taj mahal was in there too.. |
