I’m not unfamiliar with computers but Vista is definitely a different game. I did some research (thank you Raven for the link). In the end, I did manage to blow out Vista but was still unable to install XP.

On a good note, I reinstalled Vista and was finally able to download the software that I needed. I’m not sure what I did during the reinstall that enabled me to override what was preventing Vista from allowing me to do this. Vista still sucks but I can live with it.
